'New Nordic School is developing an AI enabled personalized education experience,' says Stephen Cox

New Nordic School is transforming the current systems of education by empowering all students to explore their natural creativity and shape their own future. Read our exclusive interview with Mr. Stephen Cox, Chief Education Officer, and find out how an A.I. enabled curriculum is beneficial to the future of education.

Do you believe that an A.I. enabled curriculum accelerates learning? How can schools and universities start to implement a similar approach?

If we want technology to truly benefit the learning process, we must design it to work for a new way of learning in partnership with teachers and students.

体育365We want to solve two key educational problems – how to mass-scale quality education, and how to reduce the burden on teachers, through workload reduction and simplification of workflows.

By capturing data at each stage of our learning cycle, we can utilize Artificial Intelligence, big data analysis and automation to optimize personalized learning integrated into our technology ecosystem.

体育365We will create an integrated technology solution that automates planning, creates dynamic suggestions for grouping and activities and suggest the next steps of personalized learning.

The idea of a Multi-Age classroom might seem challenging to most parents. How can you reassure them that this practice benefits students?

The benefits of multi-age learning are multi-fold. It mirrors real life in which people of all ages and abilities work together. It builds respect and understanding starting from a young age where children can support, teach and learn from each other. It builds leadership in the older students and confidence in the younger students.

体育365The greatest advantage is that it allows for personalized learning so that students can be dynamically grouped and taught at the level that they are at as opposed to teaching a full class the same concept at the same level altogether. It enables teachers to support students in their weak areas and extend them through their strengths. The possibilities are limitless.

How does the Nordic Baccalaureate curriculum encourage students to explore their natural creativity?

New Nordic School recognizes that there are different ways to share knowledge and new ideas. Some students prefer to write, some prefer to draw or paint or animate, others are natural performers or inspiring public speakers, and there are also those who excel at making music. When units of learning framed around broad concepts such as biodiversity, sustainability, justice, equality, and well-being are coupled with a diversity of ways to share what they know, every student can find ways to tap into his or her passions.

For parents comparing schools & curricula, how does the Nordic Baccalaureate differentiate itself from other more mainstream systems on offer?

体育365The Nordic Baccalaureate curriculum is a purposeful, interdisciplinary, project-based model of teaching and learning in which students examine real-world phenomena from different perspectives and apply knowledge from multiple subjects in ways that are personally meaningful. This approach is what enables us to provide a personalized educational experience tailor-made for each child. Compared to other systems that focus primarily on preparing students for high-stakes tests, the Nordic Baccalaureate curriculum equips students with the competencies to address any challenge life may present them.

What are some of the skills students need to be taught to be future-ready?

The teaching of morals, routine measurement of characteristics other than intelligence (e.g. emotional intelligence) will be commonplace. An emphasis on the need to learn how to learn. Not merely the acquisition of new facts and inputs, but the capacity to discard the unnecessary and to transform useful information into effective and productive realities.

Students still need encouragement and human interaction to be part of what is still a human world. More importantly, teachers are a key element in the learning of non-cognitive skills such as grit and perseverance that lead to lifelong learning. For example, students need to learn not only how to DO math, but to learn how to LEARN math as well. They need to learn how to work collaboratively, develop leadership skills, and become risk-takers.

体育365Future-ready skills include locating, evaluating, and applying information from a variety of sources, effective communication and collaboration within multicultural settings, and meaningful participation in society. When a student knows how she learns best, uses that understanding to combine information into new ideas, and effectively shares those ideas with the world, then that student can accomplish anything she sets her mind to. Literate children who know how to learn and effectively communicate new ideas with the world are equipped with the tools to manage daily life, collaborate across cultures, and work meaningfully to build a sustainable future for themselves and for all of us.
